What is LDPE?

LDPE stands for Low-Density Polyethylene, a thermoplastic polymer produced from ethylene via a high-pressure polymerization process. Known for its flexibility, softness, and translucency, it typically has a density ranging from 0.910 to 0.940 g/cm³. Its key characteristic lies in its highly branched molecular structure, which reduces packing efficiency, making it more flexible and less rigid compared to HDPE or LLDPE.

For instance, SABIC produces the LDPE grade such as SABIC® LDPE 2100N0, with a density of 921 kg/m³, specifically optimized for heavy-duty film and extrusion processes. Its properties—including good impact resistance and ease of processing—make it a preferred material for lightweight, flexible products.

What are the primary applications of LDPE?

LDPE is widely used in:

  • Film products: Shopping bags, shrink film, agricultural film

  • Liners: Container liners, geomembranes

  • Flexible bottles: Squeeze bottles, cosmetic tubes

  • Cable insulation

  • Injection-molded lids and caps

Is LDPE food-grade safe?

Yes. Many LDPE grades are approved for food contact. Food Contact Applied and compliant with the following standards:

  • FDA 21 CFR 177.1520

  • EU Regulation No. 10/2011

Common food contact applications include Bread bags, Frozen food packagingAnd Bottle caps.

Is LDPE recyclable?

Yes. LDPE is recyclable and falls under Plastic recycling code #4However, Film waste Is challenging to recycle due to contamination and collection difficulties. Recycled LDPE is commonly used for:
