PLA (Polylactic Acid) is a 100% bio-based thermoplastic derived from renewable resources like corn starch or sugarcane. It is industrially compostable and biodegradable under controlled conditions. PLA offers a reduced carbon footprint compared to petroleum-based plastics and is widely used in sustainable packaging, 3D printing, and disposable products.

Physical Characteristics: Milky white or light yellow translucent pellets with a hard and brittle feel. Possesses a subtle corn/starch fermentation odor. 100% bio-based renewable material, industrially compostable.

Is PLA truly biodegradable?

PLA is industrially compostable — it biodegrades 90%+ within 180 days under industrial composting conditions (high temperature, humidity, and microbial activity). In home compost or landfill conditions, degradation is much slower. PLA is not "biodegradable" in the ocean.

What temperature can PLA withstand?

Standard PLA has a glass transition temperature of 55–65°C and a melting point of 150–160°C. It is not suitable for hot-fill or high-heat applications. Crystallized PLA grades can achieve higher heat resistance up to ~100°C.

Does PLA compete with food production?

No. PLA production uses only ~0.013% of global agricultural land, and the industry primarily uses industrial-grade corn starch, not food-grade corn. The impact on food supply is negligible.
